Dr. Joe hardly needs introduction, but just because, here goes: Joseph Lstiburek is the founding principal of Building Science Corporation. Dr. Lstiburek’s work ranges widely, from providing expert witness testimony to to overseeing research and development projects, to … oh forget it. All you need to know is the guy has his own damn Wikipedia page.

Here is what Joe says he will tackle with you in this workshop. (Let’s call it integrated design on steroids! Don’t miss this one! Should be a hell lot of fun.)

“How does building enclosure design change from single family low rise to multi-family high rise?  And from commercial buildings to institutional buildings?  How does mechanical system design change with these differing building enclosures?  And then how does all of this change based on climate?  Then let’s do all of this with retrofits….” Joe Lstiburek

Passive/zero energy buildings are at the core of the new renewable grid. They are a strategy that makes the individual buildings and the overall grid more resilient. If organized in micro-grids the whole system becomes even more resilient and cost effective. This workshop will center around example nano-grid (small micro-grids) projects that have passive building at their core and will illustrate why the two are the key to an effective, even profitable and resilient grid design. We’ll take a close look at two successful multifamily micro-grid case studies, one in California and one in Washington DC—both employing strategies to reduce demand load first, including PHIUS+ certification.
